Lending a hand to 'The God's Child Project'
Kirkwood students on a mission in Guatemala. Kirkwood Community College sponsors an annual International Study program for students enrolled the Health Science programs at Kirkwood Community College. Sixteen students and two instructors traveled August 2007 for this year's course in Antigua, Guatemala. The course work provides support for the impoverished community through donations and support services, in return the class gained spanish language training, health care volunteer experience, college credit, and the positive experiences of community service. Trisha Kreman, a public health microbiologist at University Hygienic Laboratory, was one of five scientists nationwide selected to train lab technicians in India to test for the H5N1 strain of bird flu. The program, coordinated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aims to contain the spread of the illness, which has killed nearly 200 people worldwide, by testing in areas with known cases. The three-week program began Oct. 2.
