Volleyball everywhere

I just returned from a quick visit to the state volleyball tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center.

This is quite an event, if you haven't noticed. The Gazette enjoys having this wonderful tournament in Cedar Rapids and, I think, we do a pretty good job with our coverage, thanks to folks like Jeff Linder, Jim Ecker, John Riehl, Richard Pratt and our outstanding photography crew.

It's easy to see why this sports is so popular. It's a face-paced game with action galore.

I sat through the West Delaware-Sioux City Heelan semifinal Friday afternoon. There was some excellent back-and-forth action. Heelen rallied from two games down to win, 3-2. But the Hawks of Manchester have nothing to hang their heads about.

This was a gutsy performance by both teams.

I was especially impressed with West Delaware's Libero. This young lady was all over the court, diving and sliding. In the second game, it seemed like every ball in her area she was able to dig down and get.

It was an enjoyable afternoon, a nice break from work. If you haven't been to the state tournament in Cedar Rapids, give it a chance. It's a lot of fun.
