Ferentz is out

The Detroit News is reporting that Ferentz is no longer on Michigan's list of candidates.

Iowa AD Gary Barta said all this stuff at the UNI bkb game:

"No new news. I had a great night in NY last night. I have nothing new to report. I had a great dinner in NY last night. The Klinkenborgs were there. It was an awesome evening. There is just nothing new. We're focused on 2008. Just like the last time we talked to you." -- Why doesn't he say anything? -- "There's nothing to say. He's out recruiting. We're focused on 2008. He's our coach and that's the focus." -- "We're not going to respond to rumors. I've said several times that Kirk is our coach, we're focused on 2008, nothing's changed." -- "There's nothing to say." -- "There are rumors and we've said from the beginning, we're not going to respond to rumors. I think, and I haven't been here, that Kirk has been consistent over the years. He doesn't respond. The consistent message has been he likes it here. He's our coach. We're not going to respond to rumors. That's the same message we've been giving the last three weeks."

Iowa got two recruits today.

Ferentz is headed to Keokuk today to try to talk quarterback James Vandenberg into playing for the Hawkeyes.

I'm not sure there will be a press conference. But I'll keep asking.

sooooo - why does he not comment? If he intends to stay at Iowa - SAY SO! To keep quiet is to keep the rumors flying so he can leverage. I am sick of it

Gwen, I'm not even sure it's about leverage anymore. There's probably (and I don't know for sure) not a lot more money that Iowa could spend on a coach. There are facilities. There is control, over who and isn't on the coaching staff, football operations, assistants' salaries and whatever else you can think of. In press conference settings, when Ferentz is asked about other jobs, he gives a "never say never," "plans to be at Iowa" sort of answer. Now, there aren't any press conference settings, so there are no answers.

The interest was from Michigan. We'll never know how aggressive. We don't know if there was a speck of interest from the Ferentz end. I'll certainly ask and dig, but chances are we'll never know if there was.

Educated guess, Ferentz is loyal to Iowa, his family is comfortable in Iowa, the five Ferentz children will all graduate from City High. For it to even be worth it for him financially, Michigan would've had to hit a number in the $3.5 million to $4 mill range. I'm guessing that didn't happen, but we'll never know for sure.

Marc -

Is there any reason that Coach Ferentz has NOT held his end of the season press conference?!?!

He has said on numerous times that he would relay his thoughts on when the team hit rock bottom as well as the status of certain players as well, i.e. Douglas has been through the legal system now once the season was over well it's over so what's the deal???

However I did notice that both players are no longer listed on the roster on the teams official site. It just seems odd that he hasn't had his end of the season P.C. yet.

What are your thoughts???

Duane

Hi Duane,

No reason has been given. I imagine recruiting is front and center right now. It's ultra important that Iowa nets a running back, or two.

I remember in 2000 and 2002 there were "end of the season" press conferences. In the bowl years, there were bowls to talk about. There were no press conference after the bowl game. So, as far as I can remember, there really is no protocol for postseason. As far as I can tell, the press conferences outside of the season are held when and if he wants to hold them.

It's his show.

I know this is way off topic but what is up with this lady who has made it her special duty to get the locker room changed from pink?!?!? She's not even at the University anymore, she has moved on to another job, another state!!

To me she's just someone after attention and trying to get her name in the spot light, your thoughts???

Duane, I don't know what that is. Part of me wants to think there is some strong intention there, that this person really believes that the pink lockerroom is an injustice and that she's changing the world, one pink tile at a time.

But what it really is is a completely misguided glob of cholesterol for our legal system. My kids aren't getting enough time from their coaches on the soccer field. I'm suing. My neighbor's driveway is within a foot of my property. I'm suing. My hair is curly. I'm suing.

I got in toward the end of Hayden Fry. But from what I remember of the lore of the pink lockerrooms is they're pink because of the "psychological" effects, the calming of the pink color. I don't remember the "sissie" part of it. (Who uses the word "sissie" anymore?)

We won't even get into the major flaw in the logic here. Does this person even know that Jane Meyer, senior associate athletics director at Iowa, signed off on the pink lockerroom and even picked out some of the colors? I've been in the lockerroom. I didn't know there were that many shades of pink.

This "case" has to come across a sensible judge's docket and that judge has to slap this down with vigor.
