A man and his 60-inch Sony . . .
I didn't go nuts on New Year's Eve, so I was tip top for a day of sitting in the beaten-to-hell purple (ugly purple) recliner (doesn't recline anymore) in the basement.
I haven't done this in six years. I learned a few things.
The NHL isn't dead . . . The Penguins-Sabres game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo was magical. It reminded me of a few backyard days after dad flooded the entire yard. Outdoor hockey rules and the game was a gem. I thought the game would be buried under the avalanche of bowls. It wasn't on my TV.
Next step for Illinois . . . What is it? I'm asking you. This was men and boys, more so than I thought it would be. If Mendenhall goes pro, Illinois will be a different team next season. The Illini could still contend for a Big Ten title, but they weren't ready for this.
Aloha means goodbye . . . There's a scene in "Slapshot." There's a one-way fight on the ice and someone is getting hammered. The camera drops on a ref who says, "Too much, too soon." This was that. No. 78 for Hawaii owes Colt Brennan a pint of blood. I couldn't stick with this game. Fox sports is OK for the NFL, just OK. For college, I hate it. Chris Rose is a human groin pull. Fran Tarkenton? What is this? Real People? Get a clue Fox.
On Wisconsin . . . All you organ donors out there, Tyler Donovan is in need. Tennessee beat the Badgers' QB like a rented mule. It was a lackluster end for the Badgers. Where do they go from here? I don't see them contending for the Big Ten title next season, but I don't know. They should still be able to run the ball. P.J. Hill returns, so does most of that OL. New QB, though. I think, and it's early, the winner of Iowa-Wisconsin next season is the winner of Iowa-Wisconsin and it really won't make a ripple in the conference (not that it did this season).
Oh, that Michigan . . . It was a fine and dandy send off for Lloyd Carr. One question for you, Lloyd, where was this the last five or so years? Adrian Arrington, welcome to the first day of the NFL draft, if that's what you decide to do. With Rich Rodriguez on the sidelines next season, is Iowa the last team in the Big Ten with an offense that's mostly structured around the I formation? Wisconsin and Penn State are in the same boat. We'll see if the Hawkeyes join the tide that is the spread offense next fall.
Arkansas didn't want to be there . . . I watched three plays of the Cotton Bowl.
They have a Gator Bowl? . . . Didn't watch for a second.
Early Big Ten football finish . . . Key word here is early (meaning, in this case, off the top of my head, no research and no ties), 1) Ohio State, 2) Michigan, 3) Purdue, 4) Illinois, 5) Penn State, 6) Michigan State, 7) Wisconsin, 8) Indiana, 9) Iowa, 10) Northwestern, 11) Minnesota.
Try to talk me out of 7-5 for the Hawkeyes next season.
