Ferentz on "Jim and Jim" last night . . .

Guard Seth Olsen (shoulder), Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (foot), center Rafael Eubanks (knee) and center Rob Bruggeman (ankle) have been slowed this spring.

He didn't say if they would be out for Saturday's open practice.

Marc:

This has nothing to do with above, but there is one thing I would like you to ask Kirk in his post spring press conference.

It appears that we may have some quality depth at TE this year. At the same time we have nothing but former walk-ons at fullback. Accordingly, has any thought been given to utilizing an "H back" like many pro teams do instead of a fullback. It would seem that this would be a natural. And it should give us better blocking for the run game and another receiver for the passing game.

Just a thought.

Mike

Hey Mike, thanks for posting.

I will do that.

Remember when they used Dallas Clark like that? If I'm remembering right, he never lined up in the backfield, more on the wing. It wasn't for very long because Clark became too much of a weapon at TE. Since then, I think they've gone to more traditional roles, with the one-back and two-tight end sets.

I think what you're getting at is why Iowa has seemingly decided to use the fullback strictly as a blocker. The only thing I can come up with is that it's what they believe gives them the best chance to win. My guess is that you'll see more of that this fall, especially with tailback/running back being either a true freshman or juco or Shonn Greene. It's a max protect/blocking decision partly forced by the O-line's struggles (46 sacks last fall). That puts a lot of pressure on the QB and WR/TE to be on the same page.

Iowa hasn't used FB as a carrier/receiver since Jeremy Allen. With high school offenses moving to the spread, the traditional fullback that Iowa seeks is hard to find these days.

Brett Morse might have the range to fit the bill.

Numbers to back up the fullback thing, Tom Busch had three touches last season.
